Lydia blindly stabs at her lunch with a fork. Her gaze is glued on me, and has been since we were seated thirty minutes ago. I can practically feel the questions burning on her tongue. Just as sheâs about to take the bite of pasta into her mouth, the floodgates burst open.
âSo, has Mr. Surly Silence slipped you the dick yet?â
I shouldnât have taken a sip of my iced tea. She probably planned the attack accordingly. Laughter bubbles while I try to keep my mouth shut. Itâs a valiant effort, but liquid dribbles from my pinched lips. An entire stream soon follows.
âClassy.â She has the gall to call me out while openly chewing her food.
I scoff and begin sopping up my mess. âHypocrite.â
âWhoa,â she spews. âLow blow, newbie. Not to mention totally false.â
âIs it, though?â
âYes, prissy pants. I already told you that Hacken doesnât raise classy bitches. Thatâs exactly how I spotted you so fast across the bar. Your lifted pinky might as well be a beaming spotlight in these parts.â
âHey! I take offense to that.â Mostly the prissy pants part. Her pinky comment is accurate. My fingers curl into chastised fists. âItâs a habit thatâs tough to break. Besides, it keeps the bones straight. Do you want gnarled knuckles when youâre older?â
Lydia blinks at me. âAre those the lies they teach you in finishing school?â
âI didnât go to finishing school,â I mutter. Only because I had private tutors for those lessons. That admission certainly wonât help my case, though.
âAnd my broke ass lives in a castle fit for a queen.â Then she gives me a penetrating once-over that I feel in my soul. âI singled you out for a reason. You stood out like a polished turd in a pile of moldy crap. Smelling the same old shit gets old.â
I gag at the visual. âThank you?â
She points at me with her fork. âAlthough, youâre not overly polished either. I appreciate that about you. Very humble.â
My parents would be outraged by her observation. Me? I smile in gracious delight. âThatâs the nicest thing youâve ever said to me.â
Lydia rolls her eyes in a dramatic fashion. âYou should probably get out more.â
âWhat do you think Iâm trying to do?â I gesture at our surroundings. Weâre occupying one of the five tables. It makes no difference that the other four are empty.
âThe patio at Timbered Tavern doesnât count.â
âDoes for me,â I grumble. âThis bar is my main food source.â
She cringes. âThatâs nothing to brag about. Also, you should be concerned for your health.â
âItâs hard to screw up a salad.â I gesture to my empty bowl.
âThe fact you refuse to try anything else on the menu is very telling.â
âWhatever. I like it here. Weâre having fun.â I tip my face to the sky, taking in the sunny rays.
Lydia spears more noodles. âYou and I have very different definitions of fun.â
âCompared to what Iâm used to, this is paradise.â
Her chewing slows as she digests that nugget. âHowâs that possible?â
âYou wouldnât understand.â Not many can, other than girls trapped in privileged oppression.
